ATI 425® Alloy Technical Data Sheet

Introduction

ATI 425® Alloy is a strong, ductile, cold-rollable titanium alloy available in a variety of product forms, including continuous cold-rolled sheet. Originally developed by ATI for ballistic armor applications, it has recently been characterized for aerospace and industrial applications, including publication in the MMPDS handbook.

ATI 425® Alloy is produced in a variety of product forms, including sheet, coil, strip, Precision Rolled Strip® and foil, plate, seamless tube, shapes and rectangles, as well as castings.

properties

ATI 425® alloy compares favorably in strength and workability to many other standard alloys.

Characteristics

Available in 36″, 1-meter and 48″ widths, ATI 425® Alloy cold-rolled coil combines tensile strength, gauge tolerance and finish quality with the advantages of a continuous product form, especially over alloys typically available only in pack-rolled sheet.

Even though ATI 425® Alloy is classified as a high-strength alloy, it can be cold-worked quite easily compared, for example, to Ti-6Al-4V (6-4 titanium). An alpha-beta alloy that uses iron in place of vanadium as a beta stabilizer, ATI 425® Alloy’s lower aluminum content and higher oxygen and iron content combine to give it its combination of ductility and tensile strength. As a result, the formability of ATI 425® Alloy makes it useful in high-strength applications that require roll-forming and bending.

AMS

Certifications

Processed to the AMS 6946 specification, ATI 425® Alloy sheet has higher strength than CP grades, with formability that is better than 6-4 titanium or SP700. MMPDS allowables have been determined, and are available for design purposes.. Additional industry and customer specifications are being developed.

ATI 425® Alloy is recognized by ASTM and has been assigned titanium grade 38. The ASME Board on Pressure Technology Codes and Standards (BPTCS) has approved ATI 425® Alloy for use in Section VIII, Div. 1 construction up to 600° F (316°C). ATI 425® Alloy can be welded using ERTi-38 weld wire, which is produced in accordance with AWS 5.16/A5.16M.

SPF

see battelle’s technical report “Characterization of Titanium Ti-425 Alloy Sheet under SPF Conditions”

Super Plastic Formability

Testing by Battelle NW Lab to evaluate ATI 425® Alloy for Super Plastic Formability (SPF) shows that ATI 425® Alloy sheet has good SPF at 1650°F (898°C) with comparable m-values.

Formability

ATI 425® Alloy can be both hot and cold worked. Material produced to ASM 6946 routinely meets a 3T bend factor.

Weldability

ATI 425® Alloy is easily weldable by standard techniques including TIG, GTAW, friction stir and EBW processes. Annealed autogenous welds can typically be bent to radii of 5-6T in sheet and light plate gauges.

Corrosion Data

ATI has evaluated coupons of ATI 425® Alloy in a variety of media. ATI 425® Alloy performs similarly to 6-4 titanium and Ti-3Al-2.5V (3-2.5 titanium) in marine environments and many media of the chemical process industry. Detailed information is available on request.

Potential Applications

Due to its unique combination of tensile strength and ductility, ATI 425® Alloy sheet is a potential candidate for a wide variety of applications that require roll forming and bending. Its availability in continuous cold rolled sheet also makes it suitable for applications with long, flat form factors that benefit from fewer joints and seams, and its high gauge tolerance compared to pack-rolled sheet offers opportunities for weight reduction through down-gauging. The surface finish quality of cold-rolled ATI 425® Alloy makes it a candidate for weight reduction in applications that typically require coatings to meet finish requirements.
